An affiliate program is a marketing tool based on the concept of revenue sharing, where a commission is paid for referring business. A web advertiser will recruit persons responsible for writing and maintaining websites (a webmaster), to insert client’s banner ads or buttons at key points in their websites. The webmaster will receive some kind of commission once a visitor to the site has clicked on the affiliate advertisement, and has been linked through to the client’s own website. This is popularly known as Affiliate Marketing.
The most common forms of affiliate programs are (yes, as per the common belief, CPA is not the only part of affiliate program) :
• pay-per-click – the webmaster receives a commission every time a unique visitor clicks on the banner add/button link.
• pay-per-lead – the webmaster receives a commission every time a visitor completes a client’s lead, such as an online survey, or software download.
• pay-per-sale - the webmaster receives a commission every time a visitor linked from their site completes a sale. This can either be on a flat commission rate, or for sites with a high levels of traffic referral, commission may be based on a sliding scale.
For an affiliate program to be successful, the type of advertisement needs to be carefully researched. You will need to ensure that you are advertising products or services relevant to the type of site you intend to insert banner advertisements/buttons on. For example if you are advertising dating affiliate programs, then you need to look at your target audience (women 16-40 yrs old) and choose websites through which this target audience will be passing.
As a publisher, you need to ensure that your site is running to its optimum content level, to encourage both new and repeat visitors. Take advantage of podcasts, video clips, articles, and blogs and think about designating key pages to promote affiliate products, and make these as professional and informative as you can. Always update your websites as regularly as possible (at least once a week) and think about producing a regular email newsletter so that you can reach people and advertise even when they are not logged on to your site. Make sure you are active out in the web community, through webrings, social networks, blogs and other groups as this is a great way to advertise your own site and draw new visitors in.

Finally make sure you spend time recording and analyzing all your weekly site traffic with inbuilt or third party affiliate marketing tools, so that you can spot trends such as which pages of your site are most popular, which keywords are converting, traffic source etc. You can then use this information to maximize the impact of your affiliate advertising programs, and to improve your website as a whole.
