The file extension IEXLORE.EXE is the main executable file for the Microsoft Internet Explorer, and is a legitimate basic application that lets allows you access to the Internet and surf through webpages. However as executable files are able to run routines and applications without the intervention of the user, they are ideal systems for delivering viruses and malicious programs. Once a dangerous exe file such as a Trojan is in your computer it can allow hackers to access your CPU from a remote location, and download your personal information including passwords and internet banking logins. There are some prevalent viruses, malware and spyware programs that mask themselves as legitimate IEXLORE.EXE files that can hid in your system running malicious routines. These are normally identified by three main ways:

• Legitimate IEXPLORE.EXE file names are always in capital letters and kept in the program files folder. Any i.explore.exe files that are in lower case letters, and saved in the C:/windows/system32 subdirectory have a high risk of being viruses. Also any file named “i.explore.exe.pf” at windows/prefetch is also likely to be a virus.
• Trojans running on exe files usually cause your computer to slow down, sometimes as much as by 60% even when you have no other programs running.
• Check to ensure you computer is not accessing the Internet when you do not have it open, or if you have broadband when the computer is actually off. You can check this by looking at the modem to see if the connection light is on when you are not using the computer – this will indicate that someone may be trying to access your computer from a remote location.

To check whether you have a malicious iexplore.exe you can open your task manager whilst you are using your computer and check to see if any iexplore.exe are running that you are not aware of opening yourself. Try ending these programs and if they start up again on their own a few minutes later then it is likely you have a Trojan.
