A team of researchers from The University of Manchester have recently developed the world’s smallest transistor. The transistor is ten atoms wide and it is one atom thick. Researchers have used graphene to build this transistor and graphene is expected to replace silicon in coming years.

Graphene was discovered four years ago and it is basically a single layer of graphite. Graphene is considered as a super material as it is only one atom thick, transparent, conducts electricity faster and offer many potential applications. It can even be used in LCD displays. It may even replace silicon in coming years.
Also, the new transistor works perfectly at ambient, room temperature conditions. Transistors are key building blocks of several electronic products and the new transistor will be very useful in decreasing the size, weight of upcoming electronic products. However, it can take some time as researchers are still analyzing the properties of graphene.
